Results indicated that both identity foreclosure and athletic identity were inversely related to career maturity. Significant effects of gender, playing status (varsity vs. nonvarsity), and sport (revenue producing vs. nonrevenue producing) on career maturity were observed. The findings suggest that failure to explore alternative roles and identifying strongly and exclusively with the athlete role are associated with delayed career development in intercollegiate student athletes, and that male varsity student-athletes in revenue-producing sports may be especially at risk for impaired acquisition of career decision-making skills. The results underscore the importance of understanding athletic identity issues and exercising caution in challenging sport-related occupational aspirations in presenting career development interventions to student-athletes.

If I identify myself as a runner and I am no longer able to run, then my identity becomes lost.

This quote from my friend Rui has really struck a nerve within me. Becoming a “runner” gives you an identity. It gives you something that you are and can become. I think as human we are constantly looking for gratification. We want to be able to be a part of something. We want to know who we are and what we should be doing. Being a runner, I completely agree with Rui’s statement. Running is a huge part of who I am and when I can’t run I have this intense feeling of anxiety and worry. Without running, I feel incomplete. I think that this is why running is such a healing experience. It gives people a sense of place in the world. I want to go on and interview other runners and ask them what being a “runner” means to them.

"The real purpose of running isn’t to win a race. He gave every race everything he had and famously stated, “To give anything less than your best, would be to sacrifice the gift.” This clip is from a nationals race which he ran with 12 stitches in his foot. This prompts me to think about.. what is it that makes us runners feel that we HAVE to run. No one would have thought him weak by dropping out of the race, but he could not let himself. Something inside feels defeated if you have to hold back. This feeling inside is what outweighs the pain.

I Can Do This.
